The Russian River Valley is a beautiful play land in Sonoma wine country. The Russian River speckled by rafts and kayaks and well appointed by majestic redwoods is the main water supply for this wonderful American viticulture area. Grape growers delight in the range of soil types: sandy loam, clay, volcanic and silt-clay-sediment created by the river. All are perfect growing soils for a variety of grapes but love to kiss the vines of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit. The fog belt created by coastal access dominates the mornings. It burns off and it becomes hot in the afternoon, the perfect venue for these sometimes temperamental grapes. The evenings are also cool so the grapes can recover and relax. Consistent from spring through harvest time it is probably what makes this appellation terroir a special place to craft wine.
Like it’s other sister AVA’s , Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley, it was planted in the nineteenth century only to be guzzled up by prohibition. Sacramental wine and a bit of bootlegging were the varieties and many wineries went out of business. It was replanted in the 1970’s and became the home to some big boys like Gallo and Kendall Jackson. Since then it has grown to over 130 wineries and 30 different varietals of wine grapes are planted. The Bohemian Club, a big secret of the rich and powerful, is nestled here amongst the trees and along the river. You can’t get in unless you know the secret password and have a five star security clearance. There is plenty to see and taste if you don’t.
Russian River Valley extends from Santa Rosa to Forestville just adjacent to Healdsburg. It is the closest to San Francisco other than Napa and Sonoma Valleys. It is a great place to do a wine tour because it has so many great elements. Great wine, unmatched beauty, coastal accents and a relaxed feeling.
